The Elephant Ninja once drowned a fish.
Story
The castle stood like a stubborn memory carved into stone.
Towers pierced the sky, banners snapped in the wind, and torchlight flickered along the walls even in daylight, as if the place refused to trust the sun alone. Below, the courtyard bustled with armored footsteps, clanging metal, and the steady rhythm of daily life in a world that expected trouble at any moment.
Above it all, the sky stretched wide and blue.
And through that sky, something vast was moving.
A dragon.
Wings beat slowly, each motion folding the air itself. Scales caught the light in shifting colors, somewhere between fire and shadow. It circled lazily above the castle, the kind of presence that should have drawn every eye upward in awe or panic.
But something about the day dulled attention. A dispute at the gate demanded focus. A merchant argued loudly over coin. A training exercise erupted into chaotic enthusiasm. The ground claimed every gaze.
And atop the dragon, seated with perfect balance, was an elephant ninja.
Still as a thought.
Unbothered by height, wind, or the sheer absurdity of the situation, the elephant ninja rested between the dragon’s shoulders, aligned with every movement as if the sky itself were solid ground. No reins. No command. Just quiet harmony between two unlikely participants in the same impossible moment.
The dragon dipped lower.
A shadow swept across the castle walls, stretching and warping over stone and soldiers alike. A guard paused mid-step, glanced briefly upward, then dismissed the shape as a cloud playing tricks with the light. Another pointed vaguely skyward, only to be pulled back into conversation before understanding could form.
Expectation bent reality.
Dragons existed in stories, in warnings, in distant mountains. But here? Now? The mind chose easier answers.
The illusion held.
Wind rushed past, carrying the distant scent of smoke and iron. The dragon tilted a wing, gliding closer to the tallest tower. For a moment, the angle aligned just right. The elephant ninja stood out clearly against the sky, unmistakable, undeniable.
And still, no one truly saw.
A falcon soared nearby, cutting through the air with practiced ease. It circled once, sharp eyes catching the outline of something unusual. A pause. A calculation. Then, as if deciding the matter required more effort than it deserved, it veered away, chasing smaller, simpler truths.
The castle continued below, loud and grounded.
The sky continued above, vast and ignored.
At the edge of the moment, the elephant ninja shifted. A single, fluid movement. The kind that belonged more to intention than motion. The presence dissolved, not by speed, but by absence, slipping away between attention and assumption.
The dragon climbed higher.
Within seconds, it became just another distant shape against the blue, then nothing at all.
And in a world that believed it understood where danger lived, something extraordinary had passed quietly overhead, leaving behind only a shadow no one thought to question.
