Where’s the Elephant Ninja? #7

Elephant Ninja Fact #7
The Elephant Ninja doesn’t play “hide-and-seek.” The Elephant Ninja plays “hide-and-pray-I-don’t-find-you.”
Story
The highway did not breathe. It roared.
Engines layered over engines, a constant mechanical tide surging in every direction. Tires whispered, screeched, and hummed against asphalt. Horns punctuated the air like impatient punctuation marks. Above it all, traffic lights ruled with quiet authority, cycling endlessly between command and permission.
Red. Yellow. Green.
And perched atop one of those lights, as if it had always belonged there, sat an elephant ninja.
The intersection below churned with restless energy. Cars packed tightly, inching forward with the tension of caged momentum. Motorbikes weaved through gaps like quicksilver thoughts. Pedestrians gathered at the edges, waiting for their brief window of movement. No one looked up. No one thought to.
Why would they?
The elephant ninja remained perfectly still.
Balance was everything. The narrow frame of the traffic light offered just enough space, a precarious throne above a river of distraction. Heat shimmered faintly from the vehicles below, blurring the edges of reality. Sunlight reflected off windshields in sharp flashes, creating momentary blindness in every direction.
It was the ideal camouflage.
Earlier, far from the noise and fumes, a lesson had been given: “To disappear, become something no one questions.” On a highway, attention moved horizontally. Forward. Side to side. Rarely upward. The sky was for weather, signs, and nothing more.
The elephant ninja had chosen well.
A driver tapped the steering wheel in quiet impatience, eyes locked on the red light. Another leaned halfway out a window, arguing passionately with someone in the next lane. A delivery van idled nearby, its engine vibrating with contained urgency. Every gaze pointed toward movement, toward change, toward the moment the light would grant release.
Above them all, unmoving, unnoticed.
A bird landed briefly on the metal arm extending from the pole, claws clicking softly. It turned its head, studying the figure perched just beyond. There was a pause, a flicker of instinct catching on something unusual. But the noise, the heat, the overwhelming tide of human focus below pulled its attention away. With a casual flap, it vanished into the sky.
The light shifted.
Green.
The highway surged forward in a unified exhale. Engines roared louder, tires gripped harder, and the entire scene reset in motion. In that instant of collective acceleration, the world forgot to look anywhere else.
The elephant ninja moved.
A single, fluid motion carried the figure down from the traffic light, landing between moments rather than between vehicles. Within seconds, the shape dissolved into the blur of passing forms, another fragment of motion swallowed by the whole.
Behind, the traffic light continued its endless cycle.
Red. Yellow. Green.
And not a single driver could have said what had been sitting above them all along.
