When the Boogeyman goes to sleep every night he checks his closet for the Elephant Ninja.

Story

The campsite came alive at night.

Lanterns flickered like grounded stars, casting soft halos across tents of every shape and color. A chorus of crickets tuned the darkness, while distant laughter crackled alongside campfires. Marshmallows browned, stories stretched longer than the trails that led into the woods, and somewhere, a guitar tried its best to remember the same three chords.

Into this glowing patchwork of noise and light stepped an unexpected visitor.

An elephant ninja.

The timing was precise. Night offered cover, but a busy campsite offered something better: distraction. Between the shifting shadows, drifting smoke, and constant motion of people weaving between tents, even the most unusual presence could dissolve into the background.

The elephant ninja moved carefully along the edge of the clearing, avoiding loose gravel and snapping twigs with practiced grace. A group of campers erupted into laughter nearby, drawing every nearby gaze toward a failed attempt at storytelling. The moment stretched open just enough.

A wooden bench sat near a low-burning firepit.

The elephant ninja took the seat.

Stillness settled in like a second layer of night. Around the bench, life continued uninterrupted. A flashlight beam swept briefly across the ground, stopping just short before turning away. Someone passed close by, arms full of snacks, eyes focused entirely on not dropping anything. Another camper paused, glanced toward the bench… then seemed to reconsider reality itself and kept walking.

The illusion held.

Smoke curled upward, blurring shapes and softening edges. Shadows stretched and shifted, turning familiar objects into uncertain silhouettes. Within this moving tapestry, the elephant ninja became just another shape, another trick of the firelight.

A raccoon emerged from the darkness, nose twitching with bold curiosity. It crept closer, drawn by the promise of unattended food. For a brief moment, it locked eyes with the still figure on the bench. Time hovered. Then, with a tiny shrug of instinct, the raccoon decided snacks were more important than mysteries and scurried off.

Hours passed in quiet fragments. Fires dimmed. Voices softened. One by one, lanterns winked out, leaving only the hush of the forest and the occasional whisper of wind through canvas.

At last, the elephant ninja rose without a sound.

The campsite slept on, unaware.

And somewhere between the last fading ember and the first hint of dawn, the presence that had never been noticed slipped back into the trees, leaving nothing behind but the faint suggestion that something unusual had almost been seen.
