When the Elephant Ninja gives you the finger, he’s telling you how many seconds you have left to live.
Story
The ski resort hummed with cheerful chaos.
Snow crunched under boots in a constant rhythm, skis whispered across packed trails, and chairlifts carried bundled figures into the bright, biting air. Laughter echoed off the slopes, mingling with the occasional dramatic tumble and the triumphant shouts that followed a successful run. Everywhere, movement. Everywhere, distraction wrapped in layers of wool and excitement.
Into this swirling winter scene arrived an unlikely presence.
An elephant ninja.
Cold air sharpened every sound, every breath visible in soft clouds that drifted and vanished. Perfect conditions for concealment, if one understood how to use them. The elephant ninja paused near the edge of a busy slope, observing the patterns. Skiers rushed downhill in streaks of color. Snowboarders carved wide arcs, sending powder into the air. Nearby, a group of visitors gathered around something far more stationary.
A snowman.
It stood proudly near a cluster of benches, assembled with care and mild artistic ambition. Rounded body stacked high, stick arms stretched outward, a crooked carrot nose pointing toward the horizon. A scarf fluttered slightly in the wind, and two uneven stones formed a lopsided smile that seemed permanently amused.
The elephant ninja approached.
Timing was everything. A sudden burst of laughter pulled attention toward a spectacular fall on the slope. A gust of wind lifted snow into a brief, glittering veil. In that fleeting cover, the elephant ninja moved into position.
Snow shifted. Shape changed.
Stillness settled.
Where there had been one snowman, there was now… a slightly larger one.
The transformation was not perfect. The proportions were unusual. The silhouette just a touch too confident. But the human eye, overwhelmed by motion and expectation, accepted the scene without question. After all, snowmen came in many forms. And who had time to analyze one when there were slopes to conquer and hot drinks to chase?
A skier glided past, slowing briefly to adjust a glove, gaze brushing over the snowman before moving on. A child pointed in its direction, paused, then became instantly distracted by the promise of hot chocolate. A nearby group posed for photos, the snowman included in the background without a second thought.
The disguise held.
Snow drifted lightly, adding a fresh layer to the illusion. The scarf fluttered again, now resting slightly differently, as if the wind itself were maintaining the act. The elephant ninja remained perfectly still, balanced between form and fiction, becoming less an intruder and more a quiet part of the landscape.
A small dog approached, nose twitching with investigative enthusiasm. It circled once, twice, pausing with clear suspicion. For a moment, truth hovered dangerously close. Then a voice called out, sharp and cheerful, and the dog bounded away, mystery abandoned in favor of more immediate joys.
Time passed in soft silence between bursts of activity.
At last, as the light began to shift and the cold deepened, the elephant ninja let the disguise fall away. Movement returned, subtle and precise. Within seconds, the figure stepped free from the snowman’s shape and into the flowing rhythm of the resort.
Behind, the snowman remained.
Perhaps slightly altered. Perhaps not.
No one could quite say.
And in a place filled with motion, speed, and spectacle, the most impossible presence had once again gone completely unnoticed.
